Private Francis Nigel Arthur White Fennell
Francis Nigel Arthur White Fennell was born on 7 September 1894 at 2 Sandford Avenue, Donnybrook, Dublin, the third of six children of clerk in the Port and Docks Board, Henry William Fennell, and his wife Constance (née Russell). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents and four surviving siblings at 16 Leinster Road, Rathmines and Rathgar West, Dublin.
Fennell enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 4 and 10 June 1915 (No.1669 – later Corps of Hussars No.71492). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France sometime between 1916 and 1918, possibly with E Squadron on 11 January 1916.
In May 1916 E Squadron came together with A and D Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps until February-March 1918, when the regiment was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.
Fennell remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 14 February 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
By 1929 Fennell was living at 31 Grosvenor Place, Rathmines, and working as a banker. On 4 June that year he married barrister's daughter Maud Sutherland at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Whitefriar Street, Dublin.
